Does a Slipped Disc Always Need Surgery? | Spine Comics Episode 1
Not necessarily. A disc prolapse—or what many people call a “slipped disc”—does not automatically mean that surgery is required.
What does “slipped disc” actually mean?
The disc does not literally slip out of place. A disc herniation is a localized displacement of disc material beyond its normal boundary. If the displaced material irritates or compresses a nearby nerve, it may cause leg pain (sciatica), tingling, numbness or weakness.
Why an MRI alone should not decide treatment
Disc bulges and herniations can also appear on MRI scans in people who have few or no symptoms. Treatment decisions should therefore bring together three things:
- Your symptoms and how they affect daily life
- Clinical and neurological examination findings
- MRI findings that match the symptoms and examination
Many patients can initially improve with appropriate non-surgical care, which may include guided activity, medication, physiotherapy or selected injections after clinical evaluation.
When might surgery be considered?
Surgery may be considered when persistent or severe symptoms substantially limit daily life despite appropriate treatment, or when examination shows concerning neurological problems. New or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or rapidly progressing symptoms require urgent medical assessment.
Take-home message: Disc prolapse does not equal automatic surgery. The right plan depends on symptoms, examination and MRI findings together.
